Rick Dobney Woodturning
"If I Had Wings" was a challenge I set myself for the AWGB seminar at Loughborough 2015. Made from a piece of Burr Elm, the winged bowl took a fair amount of planning and consideration particularly in how to mount and ultimately reverse the piece to finish the foot.
Sharp tools and a gentle touch were essential as much of the turning of the wings was fresh air and little more than a ghost of the whirling wings to go by.
After turning and largely hand sanding, I used around 8 coats of Danish Oil, lightly cut back between coats before carefully buffing the piece with Carnauba wax.
